Université Louis Pasteur Strasbourg

Louis Pasteur University (Université Louis-Pasteur), also known as Strasbourg I or ULP was a large university in Strasbourg, Alsace, France. As of January 15, 2007, there were 18,847 students enrolled at the university, including around 3,000 foreign students. Research and teaching at ULP concentrates on the natural sciences, technology and medicine. On 1 January 2009, Louis Pasteur University became part of the refounded University of Strasbourg and lost its status as an independent university.

Louis Pasteur University (Strasbourg I) is a scientific, cultural and professional public institution which enjoys legal status and educational, scientific, administrative and financial autonomy. A European scientific, technological and medical university, ULP is known for the quality and wide diversity of its courses, for the excellence of its research, and for its dynamic policy of openness to its environment.

Located on four major campuses in the Regional Municipality of Strasbourg, ULP has more than 18,500 students, 1,400 teacher-cum-researchers, 1,700 engineers, technicians, workers and administrative staff distributed within 18 components (educational and research units, schools, engineering schools and institutes), 14 research federations consisting of 74 research units (of which 44 are related to CNRS, 10 related to INSERM, and one related to INRA), 30 general services consisting of 13 central services and 17 common university and inter-university services.

Louis Pasteur University, founding partner of EUCOR (European Federation of Universities of the Upper Rhine), is also a member of the European University Centre, the first centre created in France (September 1991) which has been designed to federate the three universities of Strasbourg on a number of common issues in partnership with the regional government.

ULP, with over 18.500 students, is distinctive for its scientific contributions which place it among the top-ranking French and European universities. This unique feature is reinforced by a strong and well-established collaboration with the CNRS and INSERM, and now with the INRA, and the interdisciplinary nature of its research. ULP progresses by exploring, for example, new scientific fields through the interfacing of biology and chemistry with physics, medicine and computer science. To exploit the results of its research, ULP provides support for project leaders, researchers or students wishing to start business ventures. This type of technological transfer is encouraged by an incubator set up with the help of the regional authorities.

According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, when it was an independent university, the ULP belonged to the first 100 rank (96th in 2006).

The university was a member of the LERU (League of European Research Universities). It was named after the famous 19th-century French scientist Louis Pasteur.

Expanding academic offerings and considering the specific needs of new students: these wise and planned choices allow ULP to present an initial education programme more adapted to students and society.

Currently, the Louis Pasteur University proposes a wide variety of courses in the fields of health and exact sciences, humanities and social sciences. Over 150 State degrees are available upon admission to undergraduate and graduate programmes within the 12 UFR, 8 Departments and an Institute, 1 IUT, 1 astronomic observatory, and 4 schools of engineering.

In order to facilitate the integration of new undergraduates into academic life, ULP has initiated educational reform at the DEUG Sciences and Technology in the beginning of the academic year 20001/2002.

In continuing education, ULP has developed its academic offering based upon the research resources within its components.

The primary partner of the pharmaceutical industry at the national level, the continuing education department (Depulp) has become one of the first three departments in medical and paramedical training. It has diversified its activity based upon the need of companies, primarily in the fields of chemistry and materials, computer science and networks.
