Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU, traditional Chinese: 香港理工大學) specialises in professional education in Hong Kong. The University’s teaching units are grouped under six faculties and two schools; the Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Construction and Land Use, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, alongside with School of Design and School of Hotel and Tourism Management.

The University is the sole provider of full-time degree or higher diploma programmes in Hong Kong in the following areas: design, engineering physics, fashion and textiles, geomatics, international shipping and transport logistics, medical laboratory science, optometry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and radiography.


PolyU is strategically located in Hung Hom, Kowloon, on a site of approximately 93,500 square metres adjacent to the Cross Harbour Tunnel. There has been extensive development and rapid expansion since the last 10 years. The University is the largest UGC-funded tertiary institution in terms of number of students. A wide range of courses which directly meets industrial, commercial and community needs is offered. In addition to meeting Hong Kong's manpower requirements, PolyU also makes significant contributions towards the territory's success by providing the public and private sectors with its expanding range of consultancy, professional training and applied research services. Through these activities, the University maintains a strong partnership with the business and industrial sectors.

It is a prime aim of the University to equip students not only with professional competency but also the ability of independent thinking, good communication skills and a global outlook. The University also implements the credit-based system, which allows flexibility to students in choice of subjects and pace of studies.

History

Founded in 1937 as the Government Trade School. Situated in Wood Road, Wanchai, the School was the first publicly funded, post-secondary technical institution in Hong Kong.

After World War II, the School became the Hong Kong Technical College in 1947, offering both full-time and part-time courses. The year 1957 saw the opening of the new premises of the College in Hung Hom.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic was formally established on 1 August 1972, taking over the campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College. Its mandate was to provide professionally-oriented education.

Having gained approval from the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee for self-accreditation of degree programmes, the Institution assumed full university status on 25 November 1994, changing its name to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Today, PolyU is an institution of higher learning and offers more than 130 postgraduate, undergraduate and sub-degree programmes, supported by more than 1,000 academic and research staff members from different parts of the world.

History

Originally founded as City Polytechnic of Hong Kong in 1984, City University of Hong Kong was granted university status on 1 January 1995. With its vision, mission and role "City University of Hong Kong aspires to be internationally recognized as a leading university in the Asia-Pacific region". And today it is regarded as one of the world's leading academic institutions.

CityU has achieved phenomenal growth since its establishment in 1984. Today, it has a student population of 26,045 enrolled in over 145 programmes at the associate degree, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

In November 2008, the name of "Faculty" of Faculty of Business, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Engineering has been renamed to "College".

Academic Organization

The wide range of programmes is offered by three Faculties: Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, the School of Creative Media, the School of Law, the Division of Building Science and Technology, and the Community College of City University. All bachelor’s degree and postgraduate programmes are organized under the Faculties and the Schools. The School of Creative Media, the School of Law, the Division of Building Science and Technology and the Community College of City University run associate degree programmes. The Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies strengthens the operation and development of all postgraduate programmes and fosters an ambiance for graduate studies. The School of Continuing and Professional Education helps fulfil the University’s role as a centre for life-long education by providing continuing educational opportunities for the community through self-financing degree, certificate and short programmes.

Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, commonly referred to as CUHK, is the second oldest university in Hong Kong; it is campus-based and also the only collegiate university in the territory.

A brief history

• 1957, New Asia College, Chung Chi College, and United College established the Hong Kong Chinese Higher Education Association, same year, the colleges received government funding and academic status.
  
• 1959, New Asia College, Chung Chi College, and United College became government funded institutions of higher education.
  
• 1963, New Asia College, Chung Chi College, and United College combined to become the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
  
• 1965, School of education established.
  
• 1976, the Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance enacted, CUHK was established as a collegiate university.
  
• 1977, School of Medicine established.
  
• 1986, Shaw College established.
  
• 1991, School of Engineering established.
  
• 2005, program of international economy established.
  
• 2005 December, School of Law established.
  
• 2006, the establishment of two new colleges, Morningside College and S. H. Ho College, was announced.
  
• 2007, the establishment of another three colleges, C. W. Chu College, Wu Yee Sun College and Lee Woo Sing College, was announced

The university's founders hoped that it would become the bridge that connects China and the West, and to combine tradition with modernity.

The university library system houses the Hong Kong Studies Archive, Hong Kong Literature Collection, Chinese Overseas Collection, Nobel Laureate GAO, Xingjian Collection, Nobel Laureate CY Yeung Archive, American Studies Resource Collection and Modern Chinese Drama Collection, which highlight the distinctive CUHK stock of literature in Hong Kong. In 2002, the library system held than 1.8 million items.

CUHK also houses the Chinese University of Hong Kong Art Museum, which houses "a wide range of artifacts illuminating the rich arts, humanities and cultural heritage of ancient and pre-modern China.
